Le Prieuré de Saint-Hughes
The creation of the small estate in Savoie known as "Le Prieuré Saint-Hughes" was initiated during the 2022 vintage by brothers Vincent and Mathieu Quenard. Their father had commenced this journey several years ago with a single plot in the area called "Prieuré" situated in the commune of Saint Jeoire-Prieuré, now three decades past. They opted to tread the same path, aiming to revitalize and champion this relatively obscure appellation renowned for its exquisite Jacquère wines, characterized by delicate floral notes. This variety will form the cornerstone of their offerings.
Through this modest venture, they intend to convey their perspective as youthful proprietors, articulating their identity and aspirations. While actively engaged in the operations of Domaine Claude Quenard, their family estate and primary business, they view this new endeavour as a means of both heritage and innovation, a legacy entrusted to them by their father and uncle.
The vineyards of this estate are spread across Saint-Jeoire (60%) and Chignin (40%). Employing gentle tilling techniques, including the use of crawler tractors to prevent soil compaction. They have introduced green manure seeding over the past year to enhance soil fertility and structure naturally. Collaborating with fellow vintners, they have commenced a joint project to plant trees, creating essential ecological corridors vital for sustaining the natural cycles. Their vineyard treatments involve natural herbal infusions and essential oils.
Their vines have been certified organic since the 2000s and biodynamic since the 2016 vintage. The wines are treated with long ageing and slight oxidation, unfined and unfiltered, with no other oenological artifices added. These are wines that reveal the true terroirs of Savoie.
